With MegaBass on at top volumes, the bass is actually tamed somewhat by digital signal processing (DSP) to save the drivers from themselves. At half-volume on my iPhone 8, with MegaBass off, the cabinets of my testing space still rattle, and I can tolerate top volume only for about 10 seconds. On tracks with intense sub-bass content, like The Knife’s “Silent Shout,” the SRS-XP700 delivers an insane bass experience. Turning on MegaBass when the volume is high should send jolts of sheer joy through fans of intense low frequencies, and seriously annoy your neighbors.
This isn’t some sort of approximated bass depth produced by a passive radiator-the drivers are really delivering a substantial thud. It would be wise to use the power cable whenever possible, but this requires uncovering the connections port, and this means the IPX4 water-resistance no longer applies.Įven with the MegaBass feature turned off, the SRS-XP700 delivers serious bass thud that approaches the kind of low-end thunder you might hear from a club PA. This isn’t shocking what’s really surprising is that a speaker this big can put out sound this loud off of a battery at all, and doesn't have to be plugged in at all times.

The manual states that the battery life drops to five hours with MegaBass and LED lights on, and the volume set to maximum while streaming Bluetooth audio. Sony estimates the SRS-XP700’s battery life to be roughly 25 hours, but your results will vary with your volume levels. The SRS-XP700 is compatible with Bluetooth 5.0, and supports AAC, SBC, and LDAC Bluetooth codecs. Arguably, the most useful part of the app is the Illumination section, where you can choose various LED patterns, including the all-important Off. If you want to use MegaBass, it can be enabled/disabled on the speaker itself, so there's no need to dig through the app for it. The app also lets you toggle some audio processing features we generally recommend leaving off, including ClearAudio+, LiveSound, and MegaBass.
DJ effects like flanger and isolator can be fun for a minute, and a Sound section lets you play with a meager three-band EQ (only available with MegaBass disabled). The Sony Music Center app feels a tad superfluous. The SRS-XG500 is more rugged, with an IP66 rating that can handle high-pressure water sprays and is protected against dust. Just don’t unleash the garden hose on it. The speaker can handle light splashes and misting, and you can wipe it down with a damp cloth.

The IPX4 rating isn’t impressive for a portable Bluetooth speaker, but it's fine for a system this size. It has additional rubber feet for laying on its side, to arrange the stereo drivers in a left/right array. Measuring 27.4 by 12.4 by 14.5 inches and weighing an intimidating 37.3 pounds, the SRS-XP700 is more tall than wide, resembling a bass amp more than a typical portable speaker. That said, the smaller SRS-XG500 might be more appealing to most users, since it takes up a more reasonable amount of space while still delivering plenty of power. Both speakers have built-in LED light shows and karaoke inputs, and can easily power your next outdoor party, but in terms of sheer huge sound the SRS-XP700 represents the better value-it’s larger, louder, and more capable of thunderous bass depth. While it's huge, the SRS-XP700 technically portable and has decent battery life, but lugging this speaker around is a bit of a pain even with two built-in handles. On the even larger side, there's the kitchen-trash-can-sized Sony SRS-XP700. On the "small" side, there's the boombox-sized SRS-XG500. If you're looking for a big, booming speaker for your next barbecue, Sony has two strong options for the same $449.99 price.
